It took a few more days, but the boarding of ParallEarth was finally complete. The process had been so messy that the transport portals were dismantled, immediately stopping all interstellar travel between the two hubs.

The nuclear detonations hadn’t destroyed the portals, we destroyed them ourselves. Now, our colleagues orbiting the Earth would be watching and waiting for the world below to implode.

We were all curious about the elusive date.

I wanted to be there for my friends, but Matthew was right about me not being ready to share a confined space with them yet. I needed to get my perpetual hunger under control. Alexis had enough of a bias against vampires. Having her see me as a ravenous baby vampire might just tip her over the edge.

I spent a day and a half of quality time with Matthew to acclimate a little more to my new vampire body and abilities. We also took this time to continue our sexcapades without the restraint of human frailty. And did it hit the spot—literally.

But after a few days of play, it was time to be responsible and get to work. Controlling my vampire urges was priority number one.

Matthew made the call to Lysa and told her we were coming. Like when I was committed to Sisters of Mercy the first time as a candidate, I packed one small suitcase, but this time I’d be able to take it with me. I’d have to dress the part of an orderly during my daytime shifts, but at night I’d be permitted to wear my own clothes.

I had a very different view of the hospital when we arrived this time. I was no longer going to be one the helpless victims having to endure the desires and whims of the vampire staff. However, I would also not be one of the attackers. I would be working on patience and control while I cleaned the messes left behind by higher ranking vampires.

“It feels like yesterday that I dropped you off the first time,” Matthew said, patting me on the thigh.

“I won’t eat myself sick this time,” I said. “See, not an Oreo in sight.”

“You don’t have to be afraid.”

“I know. I’m not.”

“Good.” However, Matthew was the one who sounded afraid.

We stepped out of the Land Rover, and Matthew retrieved my bag from the trunk.

“I’m quite capable of carrying my own bag,” I said.

“Yes, but I still like doing things for you. It’s the least I can do.”

“You saved my life. I’d say you’ve done plenty.” But I wasn’t really arguing. I still appreciated him carrying my bag and opening the door, allowing me to step in first.

Since it was morning, the front desk was vacant. However, we weren’t joined in the waiting room by Mallory and her family. We weren’t greeted by Jack and Ashley. These things reminded me this time would be a very different experience.

Matthew led the way into the main hospital area, down the brightly lit hallways, and stopped at Lysa’s office door, knocking quietly while letting himself in like he still owned the place.
